Phoonk 2 - Review

Ramgopal Varma's love for horror and supernatural continues. This time, in Phoonk 2, the team behind Phoonk promise more chills, more thrills and more screams. But what you get to hear at the end of the screening is a moan, since Phoonk 2 lacks the chills, thrills and screams that were the mainstay of its first part.

A sequel works if it goes one step ahead of the first part, in terms of content mainly. But Phoonk 2 doesn't take a step forward, but a step backwards. So what's the problem? Let's get into the introspection mode...

The problem is, what does the viewer expect from Phoonk 2? More terrifying and scary moments, right? But Phoonk 2 comes across as one of those usual revenge films, which tries so hard to create an eerie atmosphere, but never succeeds. It's more of a slasher film actually!

The problem is, the pace of Phoonk 2 is excruciatingly slow, which just doesn't work or a horror film. The story unravels at a snail's pace and with hardly any terrifying/eerie moments in those two hours, the film falls flat on its face.

The problem is, Phoonk 2 fails in its writing. The idea is a master stroke and had writer turned director Milind Gadagkar handled it right, Phoonk 2 would've scared the daylights out of you. But the film looks incomplete and the viewer keeps wondering, where did the spirit disappear?

Final word? Phoonk 2 lacks the grip of Phoonk. A complete letdown!

Phoonk ends with the killing of Madhu [Ashwini Kalsekar], the woman who casts a black magic spell on Rajiv's [Sudeep] daughter Raksha [Ahsaas Channa]. PHOONK 2 begins with Madhu's ghost returning from the grave to seek revenge on the family.

Rajiv moves with his family to a new place. Raksha and her brother Rohan begin exploring the new place and the surroundings -- the lonely beach and then the woods behind the house. The terror begins with Raksha and Rohan finding a doll in the woods and then it progresses to a series of highly traumatizing experiences for the whole family.

Manja [Zakir Hussain], the only man whom Rajiv could turn to, meets a gruesome death at the hands of Madhu's ghost. Madhu seeks revenge on Rajiv by torturing his loved ones -- his wife Aarti [Amruta Khanvilkar] and their children, Raksha and Rohan -- in unimaginably cruel ways.

Debutante director Milind Gadagkar uses every trick in the book to make Phoonk 2 work - night shots, secluded bungalow, eerie silence, captivating sound design and zany camera angles. Gadagkar does everything right, but conveniently forgets that any film, irrespective of its genre, works if the story is captivating and moves constantly. In this case, the story just doesn't move in the first hour, except towards the interval point.

The post-interval portions show some movement, but a number of questions remain unanswered. What do Amit Sadh and Neeru see in the jungles that they start running helter-skelter? Also, if the spirit could enter a body [in this case, the wife's], where does it disappear when the wife falls off the terrace towards the end? Ideally, you expect the spirit to come face to face and battle it out with the already cornered Sudeep and his two kids. But the spirit doesn't!

Gadagkar had a brilliant idea, but he fails to translate it well on celluloid. To make matters worse, the film just doesn't scare you one bit. The sound design is right, while the movement of the camera reminds you so much of RGV-directed movies.

Sudeep does a fairly okay job. Amruta Khanvilkar is expressive enough. The kids, Ahsaas and the kid playing her brother - are efficient. Neeru and Amit Sadh don't get much scope. Ashwini Kalsekar is hardly there. Ganesh Yadav, Zakir Hussain and Jeeva make brief appearances. Anu Ansari is okay.

On the whole, Phoonk 2 is a good idea gone horribly wrong. Disappointing!

Abhishek and Aishwarya to celebrate third anniversary in US

Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai Bollywood star couple Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai are set to ring in their third wedding anniversary Tuesday in the US, according to sources close to the actors.

Abhishek's father Amitabh Bachchan on his blog Sunday said that the couple was taking a flight to New York.

A source close to the couple told IANS from Mumbai: "The two have gone to an undisclosed destination and will be back in time for the music release of 'Raavan' on April 24."

Shahid, Kareena patched up?

Kareena Kapoor

Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan had hugged and patched up, even Kareena ended her cold war with Aishwarya - it all happened at Karan Johar’s birthday party last year. And Karan is now taking his gift of playing Bollywood peacemaker to the next level.

Last week he played the catalyst, making Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor not only acknowledge each other’s presence but actually strike up a conversation, and a pretty warm one at that.

The venue for this patch up was Shah Rukh Khan’s bungalow, Mannat, where King Khan had hosted a celebration for My Name Is Khan.

Says a source, “Shahid and Kareena came face to face and everyone thought they would simply ignore each other like they have on so many occasions in the past. But this time, Karan happened to be present right there and instead of marching past each other, they slowed down for a bit. And the rest, as they say, is history.”

Even after the ice was broken, neither Shahid or Kareena seemed in a rush to get back to more comfortable company. They had a pretty warm exchange and a little later even Saif, who was present at the party, joined them.

“Shahid and Kareena have finally decided to leave their acrimonious past behind them. This was very evident in the manner all three of them - Shahid, Kareena and Saif - interacted with each other at Shah Rukh’s party,” adds our source.

While both Shahid and Kareena could not be reached for comment, Kareena’s official spokesperson said, “Kareena has no problem with anybody, including Shahid.” For the record, Shahid and Kareena, who were in a serious relationship for three years, parted ways in 2007, a few days before Imtiaz Ali’s Jab We Met hit the theatres.

Amitabh Bachchan demands apology from the media

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan is in no mood to forgive and forget daily tabloid Mumbai Mirror for allegedly invading the privacy of his daughter-in-law actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and for claiming that she can't risk pregnancy due to stomach tuberculosis. He has demanded an apology from the newspaper.

"The unprofessional and slanderous nature of this article in such an esteemed and respected newspaper as the Mumbai Mirror is deeply disturbing. It brings the author of this article into disrepute. It brings the editor that published this article into disrepute. It brings this particular newspaper into disrepute. It brings the profession of journalism into disrepute," Amitabh posted on his blog www.bigb.bigadda.com.

"This article is in violation of the journalistic norms of conduct as published by the Press Council of India. Beyond your own disgrace, you have caused grievous distress and harm to the Bachchan family," he added.

The article in question, "Pregnant Pause - Aishwarya Rai Bachchan", was printed in the Thursday edition of the tabloid and alleged that Aishwarya is suffering from contracted tuberculosis of the stomach and as a consequence of this disease and its treatment, she is unable to conceive. The article also said that Amitabh has been pressing the duo for a grandson and was "therefore gender prejudiced".

The 67-year-old has written to Meenal Baghel, the editor of Mumbai Mirror.

He posted: "Due to the illicit nature of this slander, I request a retraction and full apology. The full apology comprises the names of the individual journalist and chief editor, the journalist's and editor's unqualified retraction and refutation of the contents of the article, the apology should be addressed to both Aishwarya Rai Bachchan first and specifically, and also to the Bachchan family in general.

"The apology is to be printed on the first page of the entertainment section of the Mumbai Mirror on the same page, in the same size print, and including the signatures of the aforementioned journalist and editor and an immediate donation of a sum of (amount to be decided by members of my extended family of the blog) to a national charitable foundation of your choosing that supports those who suffer from tuberculosis and an article in your newspaper highlighting its work."

Aishwarya had written to the tabloid Thursday asking for a denial and apology of equal prominence. The retraction was printed in the next edition.

Akshay Kumar cancels shoot

Akshay Kumar, who is known as being a no-hassles actor and for shooting despite injuries or ailments, recently cancelled a shoot.

Reportedly, the actor was suffering from a sprain in his back that compelled him to cancel the shoot for his own production, Patiala House.

Akki has been shooting non-stop for the Nikhil Advani film at Mehboob Studios. He sprained his back during an action scene.

A source told a tabloid, "Since he performs stunts on his own, it takes a toll on his back. And he's had a back problem for a really long time. The pain wasn't getting any lesser. So, Akshay decided to rest for the day. The doctor advised the actor physiotherapy and adequate rest."

Being the producer, Akshay didn't hesitate to take a break. "No-one else lost money by his cancelling the shoot, so Akshay didn't think twice. He's had a record of working in the industry without ever cancelling a shoot, only because he doesn't like the producer to suffer losses at his expense," the source told the tabloid.

Akshay, however, managed to make it to the Mumbai Marathon yesterday. Well, it seems the actor is all set to be back in action.

Salman bowled over by My Name Is Khan

Karan Johar and Shahrukh Khan’s ambitious film My Name is Khan is impressing the top notch actors of Bollywood who also happen to be professional as well as personal rivals. Yes, you guessed it right we are talking about SRK and Salman.

Recently, perfectionist Aamir had praised the concept of film after watching its promos and now its Salman who is all praises for the movie even before its release. Salman said, “Shahrukh’s character seems to be much matured from the promos and the subject of the film seems to be very interesting. The movie looks promising from its promos.” Considering the enmity between Salman and Shahrukh since last year, this review from Salman was quite a shocker.

But as they say good work should always be appreciated and after all only an artist knows the true value of another artist.

"'Endhiran' is almost complete. 90 percent of the shooting is over," Shankar wrote on his blog www.directorshankaronline.com.

Katrina Kaif advised bed rest

Katrina Kaif As her hemoglobin count continues to plummet, Katrina’s health is causing distress to all those who know her.

Everyone around Katrina, wellwishers, co-stars, friends and family are beginning to be extremely worried about Katrina’s deteriorating health. On Sunday she was again at a suburban hospital to take further tests as her haemoglobin count continued to fall, despite treatment from the best doctors in the city.

Though Katrina has been extremely selective recently about the appearances she makes, she is obviously still straining too much and it is affecting her adversely.

On Sunday Katrina woke up unable to get out of bed. The worst blow to her frail energy level was the hectic wedding of Salman Khan’s close family-friend Krishan Narayan’s daughter which Katrina attended for two consecutive nights on Friday and Saturday for the sangeet and wedding.

Forgetting her delicate health, Katrina had simply let herself go, dancing and having a good time.

A friend explained, “It was a commitment she couldn’t wriggle out of. The bride’s father, an associate of politician Praful Patel, is a very close friend of Salman Khan. And Katrina who has always looked at Salman’s friends as her own, had to be there.”

The result of two consecutive nights of merry-making was a relapse. On Sunday Katrina had to undergo a series of complicated medical tests that went on the whole day

The friend continued, “Katrina’s haemoglobin count continues to plummet. The doctors are perplexed by this. They can’t figure out what is causing this abnormality in her blood. She has been prescribed complete bed rest.”

When contacted, Katrina tried to dismiss her indisposition with. “I will be just fine. I just need to rest.”

Aamir Khan walks the ramp to promote 3 Idiots

Aamir KhanBollywood Actor Aamir Khan designed doodles, launched merchandise and walked the ramp along with fellow actors Sharman Joshi and R Madhavan here on Friday (December 4) to promote his forthcoming flick 3 Idiots.

The movie 3 Idiots is the celluloid adaptation of author Chetan Bhagat's best selling novel Five Point Someone.

The movie revolves around three friends, whose dismal grade point averages at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) influence their friendship, love life and career choices.

Aamir Khan was all excited to promote his movie and said it would definitely be an inspirational one.

"I agree with you Rang de Basanti was an extremely inspiring film. I think that's been the effort with 3 Idiots as well. I am hoping that the story that Raju (director Rajkumar Hirani) and Abhijat (Joshi) have come up with and the way Raju has directed the film, I am hoping that it will be an extremely inspirational film for not only the youth, but each and every person who sees the film," he said.

The three actors had earlier worked together in Rang De Basanti, which was acclaimed by everyone and won several awards.

The stars walked the ramp in a collection designed by Aamir himself, and the movie merchandise was launched in collaboration with a reputed fashion house.

Aamir Khan flair of connecting with the youth is the idea behind designing the apparel and accessories, as he was also pleased to put forward his doodles in front of his fans.

"Doodling is something that all of us keep doing all our lives. So some of these doodles are in my film, or on paper while I was working on the film during rehearsals, or when I am reading the script; some of them I did later on when this concept was out that we can come out with merchandising with my doodles. So, for example, this t-Shirt I did later on," he said.

Kareena Kapoor stars opposite Aamir in the movie.

Pregnant Padma Lakshmi poses naked for Page Six cover

Jewelry collection can be purchased at Bergdorf Goodman

Padma Lakshmi sits in a cozy corner of the East Village Italian restaurant Supper, her black hair half pulled back, the rest rippling around her shoulders. As she orders a cup of coffee and an appetizer of burrata mozzarella with tomato, basil and grilled bread, the Italian words come out with a perfect roll of the r's. The waiter, eager to please but flustered, strains to avoid looking in the direction of Padma's spectacular breasts. The Top Chef host, visibly, pertly pregnant, is wearing a stretchy wool dress by Temperley, and though her limbs are still reed thin, her boobs are another story. "Everything is...plumped up," she jokes, shrugging, her large gold earrings flashing in the dimly lit room. At 39, Padma is blooming, and she appears to be heartily enjoying the second trimester of her pregnancy. She dunks a substantial hunk of bread into a small dish of white beans, garlic and olive oil. "I'm eating all the time now."

Lately, she's also in the news all the time. After divorcing writer and Manhattan party fixture Salman Rushdie in 2007 and being linked to the 69-year-old billionaire Teddy Forstmann, Padma announced this October that she was happily, mysteriously pregnant. A flood of tabloids speculated on who the father could be, but Padma, who has spoken publicly about her long struggle with endometriosis—a condition that can cause infertility—wasn't telling. Then, later that month, a curious catfight erupted between Rushdie and his recent flame, the actress Pia Glenn, after Glenn claimed to Page Six that Rushdie was still infatuated with his ex-wife: "He would talk about Padma day and night," said Glenn. Rushdie disputed Glenn's assertions in a missive to Page Six, calling her "unstable" and "radioactive."

Current Issue

When asked about Glenn's and Rushdie's statements, Padma pauses and goes uncharacteristically silent. "Even though my name was there, in that text, I don't feel that it had—how can I put this...?" She trails off, as if at a loss for words. "I just don't think I have anything constructive to add to that."

But in the few years since her divorce, as Rushdie has been spotted about town with ever-younger women, Padma has been launching business ventures that seem to fulfill the promise of her last name—Lakshmi is the Hindu goddess of prosperity. She's no longer arm candy—nor does she want to be. Says Padma diplomatically, "I [have been] reconstructing my life and putting it back together in a way that looked more appropriate to who I was."

Jewelry collection can be purchased at Bergdorf Goodman

Jewelry collection can be purchased at Bergdorf Goodman

In May of this year, she introduced an eponymous line of jewelry at Bergdorf Goodman, and she is hard at work on her new collection of the delicate gold and precious-stone pieces inspired by traditional Indian designs. This fall she also launched a line of spices, teas and kitchenware for the Home Shopping Network. "Jewels, spices and teas—I sound like Magellan," says Padma, laughing.

Once the Top Chef season-six finale airs next week, she is also set to begin writing a third cookbook, a follow-up to her 2007 tome, Tangy Tart Hot & Sweet. "I'm thinking American classics retooled or something low-fat, since everyone is always asking me how I manage to eat so much and stay thin."

Indeed, the image of Padma as a captivating foodie siren, all breathy voice and body-hugging gowns, is a familiar one. She's the hot, graceful woman who—remarkably—eats. It's also a persona that Padma is willing to have some fun with. On an episode of 30 Rock that aired in mid-November, Padma played herself in a cameo on the cult show, joining the ranks of megastars like Oprah and Jennifer Aniston. In a scene with Alec Baldwin's character Jack Donaghy, she vies to host a dating show for his network. Leaning toward Baldwin, she purrs, "Men always tell me I'm very funny." If she were to land the fictional gig, Padma enthuses, "I could actually find a balance between work and...[she strokes her belly fondly]...being a mommy!" She then steals grapes from Baldwin's coffee table, apparently ravenous. The appearance, says Padma, who declines to speak directly about her pregnancy but is not afraid to reference it on TV for an audience of nearly 8 million viewers, "was a sweet coup for me, but I don't want to read too much into it. I mean, I think I can laugh at myself. I'd have been like, 'Here's your tea, sir,' and left if they'd asked me."

The fame that attends a popular show like Top Chef has other perks and is drawing her a growing fan base. She is now frequently recognized on the streets of New York, even makeup-free, in her unglamorous gym clothes at local food markets. "I went to a bar mitzvah on the Upper East Side last year," recalls Padma, who is talking with her hands. "And not to toot my own horn, but I might as well have been Michael Jackson to these 13-year-old boys and girls. There were something like 30 children around me, and they were all practically hyperventilating. I had this swarm of little kids going, 'Oh, my god! Oh, my god!' Kids are so authentic, so pure, and they'd be telling me, 'My sister and I had an amuse-bouche contest, and we need you to tell us who should have won.' I think that's really cool."

Padma strips off for Page Six Magazine

Padma strips off for Page Six Magazine

Those who've worked with Padma say she exudes a powerful, sensual allure—one that can make her seem mysterious and even aloof. "[Padma] could be perceived as the bitchy bitch kind of girl because of her composure," says Nikki Cascone, the co-owner of restaurant 24 Prince and a former Top Chef contestant. "She walks on the street, and you don't see any woman remotely in her ballpark." Dale Talde, a sous-chef at Chelsea restaurant Buddakan and also a past Top Chef contestant, confesses he was mesmerized by her. "She's absolutely stunning. She's probably one of the most beautiful people you will ever see in person, and she's gotten better with age. It was completely distracting—there's a lot of downtime, a lot of time when you have nothing else to do but stare off into the world. Who do you have to stare at: [Top Chef judge] Tom [Colicchio] or Padma? It's a no-brainer, even for the gays."

Born in New Delhi, Padma moved to America as a young girl and was raised in New York and Los Angeles by her mother, a nurse, often returning to India to stay with her extended family there. After earning a degree in theater from Clark University in Massachusetts, Padma was discovered by a modeling agent in Spain and was soon walking the runway for fashion icons like Ralph Lauren and hosting a TV show in Italy. As if her caramel skin, magazine-ready figure, and growing cookbook business weren't enough, Padma is also fluent in Hindi, Tamil, Spanish and Italian. She attained name recognition in New York after she wed Rushdie, whom she met at the glitzy launch party for Tina Brown's Talk magazine on Liberty Island. After marrying in a traditional Hindi affair in 2004, they became incongruous regulars on the party circuit, even appearing together in the front row at fashion week, Padma often wearing gorgeous, skin-baring frocks.
