Amitabh Bachchan is being paired opposite Sarika

For the first time, Amitabh Bachchan is being paired opposite Sarika in Shoojit Sircar’s untitled film (earlier called Shoebite), the shooting for which is on in Shimla. The news is that the Big B was somewhat concerned about the absence of a suitably strong and charismatic co-star.

Apparently, Bachchan also wanted to be paired opposite Sarika after her bravura performance in Parzania. The opportunity came when Tabu said no to Shoojit Sircar’s project.

A source close to Big B said, “He has done enough films with Jaya Bachchan and Jaya Prada. Rekha, he won’t act with. Hema and he were a smashing success in Baghbaan but flopped in Babul. Dimple Kapadia and Sharmila Tagore don’t click with Bachchan. That’s the reason why he has gone into an experimental mode with his co-stars.”

He acted with Shefali Shah in Waqt, Rani Mukherji in Black, Tabu in Cheeni Kum and Preity Zinta in The Last Lear.

Chemistry in the air

The Bachchan-Sarika pairing is apparently kindling unique chemistry in the frozen snowscapes of Shimla. Director Shoojit Sircar is all praise for the 65-year-old star. He says, “Amitji is turning out to be a role model for all of us over here. We are frozen to our bones here.”

Adding to their woes is the fact that all the scenes are being shot outdoors in the snow.
He says, “Most of us can’t even feel let alone see anything. Amitji takes to the camera as though the freezing weather is a prop. He’s the first one to reach the location. He rehearses rigorously in the freezing temperature with Sarika who plays his wife.”

The film is about an autumnal couple rekindling their love for one another.

“I’m just capturing these two aging people in the snow. I find the snow very romantic. In fact, I shot my first film Yahaan with Jimmy Shergil and Minissha Lamba,” he reminisces.

As for Sarika, the director says, “She brings a certain freshness to the film. Amitji and Sarika look so much like an abiding couple I wonder why nobody thought of casting them together before!”
