Freida Pinto to hollywood bags Woody Allen film

After her debut performance in the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire, Freida Pinto has now bagged a Woody Allen film alongside Anthony Hopkins.

According to the Variety website, newbie Freida Pinto will now join the long list of Woody Allen’s muses. His earlier favourites include Scarlett Johansson and Diane Keaton. Besides Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins, Allen's new film stars Oscar nominees Naomi Watts and Josh Brolin.Continuing with the Oscar connection, Penelope Cruz won her first Oscar for her portrayal of the beautiful and volatile Maria Elena in Allen's last flick Vicky Christina Barcelona. MediaPro, which produced Vicky Christina Barcelona, will finance this film as well. While the movie has not been titled yet, filming will begin in July this year.

Freida, who is clearly being pursued by Hollywood bigwigs, is being represented by the world’s most powerful talent agency, Creative Artists Agency. They handle public relations for notable personalities such as Tom Cruise, Steven Spielberg, Brad Pitt, Penelope Cruz, Jennifer Aniston, Al Pacino, Kate Winslet, Kate Beckinsale, Meryl Streep and Oprah Winfrey among others.

For someone who shared screen space with a newcomer (Dev Patel) in an indie film, working with established stars Anthony Hopkins, Josh Brolin and Naomi Watts -- in a Woody Allen film, no less -- is no small feat. Way to go, Freida!

About Woody Allen

He is a 73-year-old American. The Oscar-winning director has been making movies since the mid-1960s. Annie Hall, Manhattan, Hannah and Her Sisters, Husbands and Wives, Match Point and Vicky Christina Barcelona are some of his more famous creations.

Jaycee Chan (son of Jackie Chan) to bollywood

Perhaps Abhishek Bachchan would be able to empathise with Jaycee Chan. With the load of expectations of millions of fans weighing down on his shoulders, the only son of Chinese acting legend Jackie Chan has just found some strong ground under his feet. Jaycee is Jackie Chan's son he is also a musician and a guitarist who released his first album in 1984.

"This is my first interview with an Indian journalist. I just hope that the Indian audience accepts me the way they have accepted my dad," says Jaycee over the phone from Beijing about his first film Invisible Target being released in India.

Already a star in Japan, China and Hong Kong, Jaycee says that he's already received a few offers from Indian producers to star in their films. "I might be doing an Indian film soon. I was told that it involves a little bit of dancing. But when I went back and switched on MTV India, I found that there is a lot of dancing and 100 people do the same step at one time. Now, I am a little skeptical whether I will be able to do that the way you guys do it."

But does he know martial arts as well as Jackie? "No, I am not formally trained in martial arts. I have learnt a little bit for my own defence. I am 26 years old and too old to learn martial arts now. I don't intend to."

So, is there an actor he wants to date on screen? "Ah! Thank god I am still single. Otherwise my girlfriend would have killed me. I liked Maaleeeka (Mallika Sherawat) a lot but I can't really think of romancing her. You want to pair me up with somebody?"

Salma Hayek breastfeeds an African woman's baby- Watch Video

Wet nursing, a practice that seemed to go out of fashion along with live-in ladies’ maids, has seen a renaissance lately. A couple of years ago media stories started popping up about mothers hiring wet nurses or cross-nursing each other’s babies. There is even an agency in LA (where else?) that supplies wet nurses, which has reported steady growth in the practice.

Now, Salma Hayek has done some wet-nursing herself, on a humanitarian tour of Sierra Leone. While touring a hospital, the Hollywood actress and Unicef spokeswoman met a woman who could not feed her hungry baby boy. So she breastfed the baby herself.
Hayek later described how her great-grandmother did the same in a village in Mexico.

'My great-grandmother was in a Mexican village and they found a woman in the street inconsolably crying and the baby was also crying, crying, crying.

'My great-grandmother went up to her and said "What is the matter?" and the mother said, "She is very, very hungry and I have no more milk".

"And in the street my great-grandmother took the baby and breastfed that baby who instantly stopped crying and went peacefully to sleep."

Hayek has been vocal about the pleasures of breastfeeding her daughter. Breastfeeding is especially encouraged in developing countries as a healthy way to feed children when the water and food supply isn’t reliable and safe.

Interestingly, the US website Salon.com reports that La Leche League – perhaps the most vocal group supporting breastfeeding – doesn’t condone breastfeeding other people’s children. It says the practice can expose infants to hepatitis, HIV and other viruses, as well as disrupt maternal bonding and confuse the baby. Even back in the day, wet-nursing was a subject of considerable discussion.

This article from 1612 describes the six things to consider when choosing a wet nurse. A few essentials are a well-formed nose, a lack of stammer and breasts “full of Azure veines”.

Michelle Obama as Vogue's cover star

Michelle Obama has ended a period of relative seclusion to grace the cover of Vogue magazine and detail her new life as “Mom-in-Chief”.

In an extensive and at times gushing interview, the First Lady talks about her young children’s schooling and her desire to open up the White House to a new generation of hip-hop-loving youngsters. Much of the interview centres on the Obamas’ two daughters, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7. “I’m going to try to take them to school every morning as much as I can,” Mrs Obama says. The two girls attend Sidwell Friends, a Washington private school that costs more than $28,000 annually for each child. “But there’s also a measure of independence. And obviously there will be times I won’t be able to drop them off at all. I like to be a presence in my kids’ school. I want to know the teachers; I want to know the other parents.”

Although Vogue has photographed every First Lady since Lou Hoover in 1929 — except for Harry Truman’s wife, Bess — Mrs Obama is only the second to have graced the cover. The first was Hillary Clinton, in December 1998. Seventeen black women have appeared on the cover of American Vogue before Mrs Obama, including Naomi Campbell, Oprah Winfrey and Halle Berry. One black man has been given the honour: LeBron James, the basketball player. The cover photograph, and a series of portraits spread over eight pages inside the magazine, were taken by Annie Leibovitz at the Hay-Adams Hotel in Washington, where the Obamas lived in the days before they moved into the White House on January 20. The First Lady, who was not paid by the magazine, appears wearing a magenta silk sheath dress by Jason Wu, the 26-year-old who designed her inauguration ballgown. “Do you see our new house?” Mrs Obama asks her Vogue interviewer, its editor-at-large AndrĂ© Leon Talley, as she looks out of her hotel bedroom window across Lafayette Square to the White House, where black-clad Secret Service agents stalk the roof. “They tell me they do that a lot,” Mrs Obama says.

Mrs Obama’s mother, Marion Robinson, has moved into the White House to help to look after Malia and Sasha. Of her daughter’s ascension to First Lady — the family grew up in a working-class neighbourhood in Chicago’s South Side — Mrs Robinson says that she feels bemused.

“I laugh now because I always taught Michelle to step out of her comfort zone in life. But I never thought she was going to step this far out of that zone.”

Mrs Obama, referring to the Bush family compound in Kennebunkport, Maine, says: “We like to joke that the South Side of Chicago is our Kennebunkport. We learnt in our household that there was nothing you couldn’t talk about and that you found humour in even some of the toughest times. I want to bring that spirit of warmth, openness and stability to my task.”

Mrs Obama says that she sees the White House as a national classroom, and wants it to be far more open and inclusive to the general public. “We want to make sure that our young people remember and understand what classical music is, who some of the great American artists are. We want entertaining in the White House to feel like America, that we are reminded of all the many facets of our culture. The Latino community, the Asian-American community, the African-American community, hip-hop, spoken word — we want to bring the youth in, for them to hear their voices in this.”

Mrs Obama has been criticised for wearing a black cardigan over her Narciso Rodriguez dress on election night. “I’m not going to pretend that I don’t care about it,” she says. “But I also have to be very practical. Someone will always not like what you wear — people just have different tastes. Some will think that a sweater was horrible, [but] I was cold. I needed that sweater!”

Mrs Obama, who mostly dresses her children, and often herself, in off-the-peg clothes from mainstream stores such as J. Crew, adds: “I love clothes. First and foremost, I wear what I love. That’s what women have to focus on: what makes them happy and what makes them feel comfortable and beautiful. If I can have any impact, I want women to feel good about themselves and have fun with fashion.”

Aamir Khan at IIM-Ahmedabad

AHMEDABAD: The thinking actor of Bollywood
, Aamir Khan played a new role at country’s premier B-School, IIM-A, upon his hush-hush visit here. He donned the roleof a professor and taught around eighty second-year students of the flagship PGDM the tricks of trade in Bollywood for more than two hours. Well, this was not any film shooting, but the superstar was at the campus to deliver lecture as a part of an elective course on ‘Introduction to Contemporary Film Industry’ introduced newly in the course
. However, Aamir’s visit to the IIM-A campus was quite dramatic, as few institute authorities were privy to this visit. Even senior faculty members and students could not know about this until the last moment.

“O really, has Aamir Khan come to the campus?’’ asked a senior faculty when told about his visit. Another faculty member reacted: “O yes, I saw him walking towards his classroom.’’ The institute tried to play down his visit and did not allow for media interaction.

Billu Barber dropped 'barber' in title

Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan has decided to drop the word 'barber' from the title of his home production film Billu Barber after a section of hairdressers objected to the word terming it as 'derogatory'.

Khan talking to reporters said that his production house Red Chillies has decided to drop the word 'barber' from all the posters.

He said that since the film is slated for release later this week, there isn't much that can be done. But he added that he doesn't want to invoke the wrath of any section of the society. "I understand the emotions and I respect. Instead of it becoming an issue where people are going to blacken out poster and give some sort of dissent or grief at cinema halls, film is not about that. We will try and remove the word 'Barber' from the posters," said Khan.

Khan said that members of Hairdressers and Saloon Association had approached him with their 'genuine concerns' over the use of the word 'Barber' and its Hindi translation hajaam.

He said that though the censor board has already cleared the film, he would not like to hurt the sentiments of the hairdressers.

"These people feel the word hajaam (barber) that should not be there in the film. We would beep the word in the film, but I don''t think we can do anything about the music. Though the censor board has already cleared the film, we don't think we have shown them in wrong light. There is no point in releasing a film by hurting the sentiments of the people whose profession we are portraying in the film," said Khan.

Khan plays a popular Bollywood actor in the film, which is about a village hairdresser and his friendship with a movie star.

Billu Barber, directed by Priyadarshan and produced by Khan, is all set for release around Valentine's Day.

12 biggest flops of bollywood

Chandni Chowk To China

Producers: Ramesh Sippy, Rohan Sippy and Mukesh Mukesh Talreja | Director: Nikhil Advani | Cast: Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone and Mithun Chakraborty

Budget: approx Rs 75 crore

Loss: approx Rs 30 crore

Why it failed: The film was touted to be the first big hit of the year. Enough and more publicity had ensured that Akshay Kumar and Deepika Padukone were all over the place just before the release.

Yet somehow the positive buzz that is usually associated with a big release was missing. If reports are to be believed, the film managed to collect just Rs 1.5 crore through the paid preview shows across the nation.Drona

Producer and director: Goldie Behl | Cast: Jaya Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra

Budget: approx Rs 60 crore

Loss: approx Rs 45 crore

Why it failed: As a thumb rule, whenever Abhishek Bachchan has worked under his director friends, the films have failed at the box office. Think of it – Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost (directed by Apoorva Lakhia), Bas Itna Sa Khwaab Hai (directed by Goldie Behl) and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom (directed by Shaad Ali) were all box office disasters.

Saawariya

Producers: Columbia Tristar and SLB Films | Director: Sanjay Leela Bhansali | Cast: Rani Mukerji, Ranbir Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor and Salman Khan

Budget: approx 40 crore

Loss: approx Rs 10 crore

Why it failed: With Om Shanti Om releasing in the same week, there was no hope in hell for Saawariya. 2007's 'other' big Diwali release, the Bhansali film was reeling at the box office barely days after it opened. Shah Rukh Khan was on a media overdrive and ensured he had all the eyeballs required. 'Diwali is all mine' he had famously declared and he showed just what he meant.

Saawariya, starring newcomers Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor, was all but entertaining as compared to Om Shanti Om. The unnecessary elaborate sets, song-and-dance ritual and a dragging story contributed to its debacle. As a theatregoer commented it looked like a ballet when it was not supposed to be one! Saawariya's plans had opened about a week before its release and OSO's barely days. Yet the Shah Rukh-starrer emerged the winner and ended up being one of the biggest hits of all times.

Saawariya opened to about 90-95 per cent collections on the first weekend. But it simply couldn't sustain the hype around Om Shanti Om and the initial audience reactions.
Perhaps the saddest part about Saawariya is that it will always be remembered as the film that made the mistake of being releasing alongside Om Shanti Om.

Tashan

Producers: Yash Chopra and Aditya Chopra | Director: Vijay Krishna Acharya | Cast: Anil Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor

Budget: approx Rs 40 crore

Loss: approx Rs 30 crore

Why it failed: YashRaj Films was riding high on the success of Chak De! India. But Tashan was clearly the film that would be their undoing. With a weak script and a screenplay that made you go off to sleep, Tashan was a disaster. The film reportedly opened to a 70-80 per cent collection at the box office – clearly not a figure YashRaj would want to boast of.

Eklavya

Producer and Director: Vidhu Vinod Chopra | Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Sharmila Tagore, Sanjay Dutt, Saif Ali Khan and Vidya Balan

Budget: approx 25 crore

Loss: approx Rs 15 crore

Why it failed: Eklavya was a movie that generated enough and more positive curiosity. It was shot in Rajasthan against a breathtaking backdrop of deserts and palaces and had a very haunting score. Yet somehow the movie never caught on. According to industry observers, Eklavya had no commercial value. Strange you may say considering it had one of the biggest star casts ever. The debacle of Eklavya proved yet again that you may have the best and the biggest names in showbiz – and the power of the media – on your side. But if you can't tell a story right, there's no way you can make money at the box office. But things weren't to end there. Eklavya was chosen as India's nomination to the Oscars and all hell broke lose.

Salaam-E-Ishq

Producers: Mukesh Talreja, Sunil Manchanda and Chetan Motiwalla | Director: Nikhil Advani | Cast: Salman Khan, Govinda, Priyanka Chopra, John Abraham, Anil Kapoor, Juhi Chawla and Vidya Balan

Budget: approx Rs 40 crore

Loss: approx Rs 15 crore

Why it failed: The reasons for this are many. But the one thing that went totally wrong was the length of the film. At a time when Indian audiences were warming up to shorter films, Salaam-E-Ishq in its epic nature was a put off right from day one.

Worse still, Salaam-E-Ishq tried to tell far too many stories in one. There were five couples and somewhere along the way the songs made the film even more unwieldy than it already was.

Salaam-E-Ishq opened to a 60 per cent collection at the box office. The collections slid further over the coming days till the movie disappeared from the screens altogether.
What added to the makers' woes was the Priyanka Chopra-Salman Khan controversy. The relationship between the two reportedly turned sour during the making of this very movie.

Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag

Producer and Director: Ram Gopal Varma | Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Mohanlal, Ajay Devgan, Nisha Kothari and Sushmita Sen

Budget: approx Rs 25 crore

Loss: approx Rs 20 crore

Why it failed: It was considered to be a big gamble – remaking what is arguably one of the most popular films of Indian cinema. And indeed it proved to be a big mistake. Right from the start, Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag was caught in controversy. The movie was initially supposed to be called Ram Gopal Varma Ki Sholay. But the Sippys – the original makers of Sholay – sued RGV and got him to get all references to the film and the character names out.

As a result, the movie was one trashy attempt of a remake. Bad jump cuts, terrible editing, poor dubbing and pathetic direction made it one of the worst film of the year. Yet Amitabh Bachchan stood by the film and defended it at every event that followed the release. Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag opened to a dismal 20 per cent collection at the box office and then fizzled out.

Jhoom Barabar Jhoom

Producers: Yash Chopra and Aditya Chopra | Director: Shaad Ali | Cast: Abhishek Bachcan, Preity Zinta, Lara Dutta, Bobby Deol, Amitabh Bachchan

Budget: approx Rs 25 crore

Loss: approx Rs 20 crore

Why it failed: Before Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, YashRaj Films was on a high. It had delivered some of the biggest hits including Dhoom 2 and Bunty Aur Babli. With Jhoom Barabar Jhoom people's expectations from Abhishek Bachchan and YashRaj had skyrocketed. But JBJ proved to be such a dismal effort at filmmaking, not only did the critics pan it even the audiences stayed away from the film. It opened to a collection of 40 per cent at the box office. Another thing happened around the time JBJ released. Rajinikanth's first big film in years Sivaji: The Boss hit the screens. Now although it was a Tamil film and should not have affected Jhoom Barabar Jhoom's collections, the Rajini mania worked its magic. The joke around the time was that the money collected by parking lot managers near theatres playing Sivaji was more than the box office collections of Jhoom Barabar Jhoom!

Lagaa Chunari Mein Daag

Producers: Yash Chopra and Aditya Chopra | Director: Pradeep Sarkar | Cast: Jaya Bachchan, Rani Mukerji, Abhishek Bachchan, Konkona Sen Sharma

Budget: approx Rs 15 crore

Loss: approx Rs 10 crore

Why it failed: Lagaa Chunari Mein Daag was probably doomed from the start. For starters, it didn't look like a YashRaj movie.

Moreover since it was set in small town India, the trademark glamour associated with a YRF movie was clearly missing. LCMD was the story of a young girl from small town India who takes to prostitution to save her family from disaster. With a non-traditional plot such as this, and a somewhat lacklustre promotion, LCMD failed to impress the critics as well as moviegoers. It opened to a collection of about 30-40 per cent at the box office.

Love Story 2050

Producer: Pammi Baweja | Director: Harry Baweja | Cast: Hurman Baweja, Priyanka Chopra

Budget: approx Rs 50 crore

Loss: approx Rs 40 crore

Why it failed: To begin with Love Story 2050 was stuck in the cans for quite many years now. It was supposed to star Kareena Kapoor in the lead role opposite Hurman Baweja.

Better sense prevailed and Kareena made way for Priyanka Chopra. The film itself opened to a 30-40 per cent opening. In the weeks to come, the movie fizzled out especially since Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na the film that released on the same day began eating into the profits.

Karzzzz

Producer: Bhushan Kumar | Director: Satish Kaushik | Cast: Himesh Reshammiya, Urmila Matondkar

Budget: approx Rs 25 crore

Loss: approx Rs 30 crore

Why it failed: Himesh Reshammiya is not exactly one's idea of a hero. Yet for some reason the guy refuses to stop trying.

After Aap Ka Surroor, Himesh made a comeback with Karzzzz. Unlike Surroor though, audiences rejected Karzzzz outright.

So Himesh's second movie as an actor opened to a pathetic 30 per cent and showed no promise of rising through the weeks that followed.

Yuvvraaj

Producer: Subhash Ghai | Director: Subhash Ghai | Cast: Anil Kapoor, Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Zayed Khan

Budget: approx Rs 35 crore

Loss: approx Rs 25 crore

Why it failed: When you try to make a musical that is stuck in the 80s and expect it to work in 2008, chances are you will be disappointed.

Subhash Ghai did just that. The film starring Anil Kapoor, Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif and Zayed Khan told the story of three estranged brothers and the love lost between them.

JANTA VERDICT: Yuvvraaj is yaawn!

The film opened to about 60 per cent collections at the box office but evidently could not sustain. It was one of those films that simply couldn't have worked at all. Think of it, the plot, the characterisation and treatment of the movie seemed too out of date.

Ranbir Kapoor is all set to give a surprise party to Katrina Kaif and not to Deepika Padukone, this Valentines Day.

Ranbir and Katrina has to shoot for some romantic songs in Turkey around Valentines day. And so, this Valentines Day, Ranbir and Katrina are going to be together in Turkey away from their partners Deepika and Salman.Sources from the movie crew have reported a growing closeness between the duo ever since the shooting of "Ajab Prem ki Gajab Kahani" has started. A few days back when the shooting for this film was going on in Ooty, the couple was spotted having dinner together and spending quality time together. And so for her new friend Katrina, the lover boy Ranbir wants to ensure that she does not miss her boy friend Salman on Valenties day and planned for a surprise party. What a caring friend Ranbir is, we must say.
Ranbir dear, think twice before stepping into Sallu bhai's personal space and be careful Deepika is watching you too.
