King Khan takes Aamir's blog in good humour

New Delhi: After Aamir Khan caught everyone's attention with his blog entry on Shahrukh, his dog; Shah Rukh Khan, the actor reacted to the dog-blog controversy. And here's what he had to say.

"Moving towards blogs is a way towards joining the journalist fraternity, I love journalists but I am an actor and would like to keep it that way."

THE DOG-BLOG CONTROVERSY: Aamir says he referring to a dog named Shahrukh belonging to his Panchgani home caretakers.

THE DOG-BLOG CONTROVERSY: Aamir says he referring to a dog named Shahrukh belonging to his Panchgani home caretakers.

Shah Rukh Khan said he chooses not to blog in reaction to Aamir Khan's recent blog entry that talks about a Shah Rukh licking his feet. This is what Aamir wrote in his blog: "Shahrukh is licking my feet and I am feeding him biscuits every now and then. What more can I ask for?"

While Aamir goes on to confirm that he's not referring to the King Khan but a dog named Shahrukh that belongs to the caretakers of his Panchgani home, there were other references.

Read between the lines: "Some of my friends claim that I bought the house just because of the dog. I would have to be a serious fan of Shahrukh's to want to do that."

Jannat
Director
Kunal Deshmukh
Music
Pritam
Cast
Emraan Hashmi, Sonal Chauhan, Samir Kochar, Jawed Sheikh

Sonia Chopra
“No car, no pyar,” drawls small-time gambler Arjun (Emraan Hashmi), who’s fallen for a girl super-fast and now wants to make quick bucks to woo her. He’s got a penchant for winning bets on cricket matches—chatta dimaag, he explains his keen sixth sense. When not doing that, unshaven and ungroomed Arjun, even a little paunchy, is pursuing Zoya (Sonal Chauhan, size minus minus zero) by buying her a ring she fancied and exhausting all his credit card limits by buying stuff from her call centre. Soon, she hops into his spanking new car and they drive away to the next song.

Arjun and his trusted sidekick Vishal (Vishal Malhotra, instructed not to act, only stutter) turn bookies and are making money faster than they can count. His father (Vipin Sharma, Taare Zameen Par) is an antithesis of the son, living in a chawl and revelling in his simple life; he tries warning Zoya of Arjun’s lying prowess and unruly ambition. Arjun’s covers up his wealth by explaining a spurt in his import-export business. When Zoya attempts to probe, he shoots back a ‘Na koi sawal karo, na koi jhoot suno’ dead-end, asking Zoya to trust him.

Arjun is then summoned by mafia don Abu Ibrahim (Javed Sheikh, Om Shanti Om) to South Afreeka to work together. From a bookie, Arjun graduates to becoming a match-fixer, luring key players into accepting hefty bribes. Arjun is adept at playing the game and researches the players’ weaknesses and preferences before approaching them.

Surplus money doesn’t calm his greed and keeps him away from home; meanwhile miserably lonely live-in-girlfriend Zoya is having an emotional melt-down with hours spent alone in malls and painting and repainting walls (yup, they’ve lifted this straight off The Devil’s Advocate).

You’ll find other similarities with the 1997 Al Pacino-Keanu Reeves-Charlize Theron starrer. Like the character of Kevin Lomax, here Arjun, is thrilled that he never fails in his job, and his ambitions and greed are limitless, blinding him to what’s right and wrong. He bites Ibrahim’s bait and sells his soul; the guilt of neglecting Zoya and lying to her repeatedly is easily drowned in an overflowing pool of money. Zoya finally puts her foot down and demands an explanation. Arjun tells the truth for the first time.

Next, he’s in jail; she becomes a pole dance in a nightclub to make a living (she was a call centre executive for Chrissake). The rest of the story in pretty interesting, but has snatches of Gangster, a Vishesh Films productions, too.

The quality of dialogue (Sanjay Masoom, The Train, Krrish) is inconsistent—while at times it flows effortlessly, it’s extremely laboured at places. Inane pieces of conversation compare cricketers to prostitutes—Jawani khatam to kahaani khatam and yet another compares the game of cricket to girls. Cinematography by Manoj Soni (Good Boy Bad Boy, Pyar Ke Side Effects) is competent, but is suddenly jerky in some scenes. The background score is interesting, especially in the second half. The music (Bhatt fixture Pritam and Kamran Ahmed) is good with Zara sa and Jannat standing out.

Quality of acting is above average. Emraan Hashmi is annoyingly smart-alecky in the first half, but his performance vastly improves as the story evolves. Also, always remaining unshaven is really not cool; wearing boring shirts or shiny suits are dated. Sonal Chauhan is pretty and makes a confident debut. Her’s is a character that really holds the story together and Chauhan does a good job of portraying the strong, spirited Zoya.

Samir Kochhar looks fab and shines as ACP Malhotra (they’re always ACPs in our films; no other designation will do). The actor who plays Ibrahim’s assistant is also very good with his menacingly smile bringing out the ruthlessness of his character.

A downside is the abundant use of film clichés—the hero is accompanied by a dithering sidekick, the suited-booted mob boss is always sipping wine, even in the afternoon, and is consistently surrounded by blonde wigs. The ACP, as is the norm after Dhoom, is always out-of-uniform in cucumber casuals with the first few shirt buttons open. Like the ice-cream cone crunching cop in Sunday and the fruit crazy one in Race, here too, the ACP struts in and maroes dialogues with his mouth full. Still, Kunal Deshmukh, despite being a first time director, shows chutzpah in his stylised filmmaking.

It’s ironic really that the film is about cricket and its stiffest competition is likely to be the IPL. Go for it if you’re a Hashmi fan and the Bhatt formula (somewhat new tale, old clichés, good music, larger-than-life climax) works for you.

Aishwarya's at Cannes

As she walked down the red carpet at Cannes with Eva Longoria, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan finally proved that she was a pro at the routine, be it Bollywood or Hollywood.

But Ash has taken her time to earn these designer stripes. Her debut at the film festival seven years ago, and for a few consecutive years, was nothing less than a design disaster.

What she wore was the big issue, with the Indian designers throwing up their manicured hands in the air and asking Ash to shape up. And that is what the Bachchan bahu has done, although she took her own sweet time over it. Dressed in a Roberto Cavalli number, she ensured that the petite Longoria – Hollywood A-lister she may be – couldn’t take attention away from her. Here’s the design frat doffing their hats to the beauty and her Cannes bit...

Rocky S: Ash is looking stunning, just like one of the Hollywood actresses who are a pro at the red carpet. She surely has evolved and Ash’s sense of dressing just keeps getting better every year. She is looking at par with Eva Longoria and French actress Rachida Brakni, who walked with her on the red carpet. Her hair is right, her purse is right and I like the fact that she has not used to jewellery to mess up the look. Rating: 9/10

Tarun Tahiliani: She is getting better by the day. As it is, she has a stunning personality and I guess whatever she wears looks good on her. She has had some bad dress days initially at Cannes. While I had liked her ice blue dress she wore last time at Cannes, this is looking fabulous. She needs to keep herself on this track. Rating: 9/10

Narendra Kumar Ahmed: Aishwarya is doing a good job by wearing this dress for the red carpet. I don’t think today you have to proclaim you identity as an Indian by wearing a saree. You can be wearing a western gown and still retain your identity, which is what Ash is doing. I guess she went wrong at Cannes the first few times because even she was new and did not know what worked and what didn’t. Her first few appearances were low on confidence and tentative. But this time, she can stand up to Eva Longoria. I would like to call her the new sex symbol of India now! Rating: 8/10

Anna Singh: Ash is looking stunning and very charming. She is happy and confident within and that is making her look gorgeous. I think she has evolved as a person too. What had not worked for her earlier at Cannes were the last minute preparations. She is more prepared now. Rating: 10/10

Varun Bahl: While Ash is looking stunning, I don’t see her wearing a dress like this in India. And that is because in India, nobody wears clothes like this. Then why experiment abroad for a red carpet? She could have worn a saree instead. It is an inherently Indian dress and she looks great in it.

Deepika Padukone, Ranbir Kapoor Engaged; To Tie Knot

Deepika & Ranbir
Putting an end to the hearsays of their breakup, Bollywood
beauty Deepika Padukone and her latest beau Ranbir Kapoor said they are engaged
and hope to tie knot once their careers stabilize.

In an interview, the young starlet Deepika made it official by saying that they both are happy with their relationship.

“Within the next five years I hope to be Mrs Kapoor and the leading lady of Bollywood.”

Talking about how it started it all, the 22-year-old actress revealed that she said ‘Yes’ when Ranbir proposed to her at the time of the release of their debut films ‘Om Shanti Om’ and ‘Saawariya’ in 2007.

She also said that they are happy in each other's company and that their parents too are happy with their relationship.
the actress stated that it was love at first sight for the couple and they struck a chord even before their first films were released.

“It was love at first sight. We met through mutual friends and we fell for each other right away but we needed time for our love to grow before we made a serious commitment,” she also said.

The hot and sizzling beauty also said that the rumors upset her a lot. But they’ve decided not to let such baseless speculation affect their love for each other.

Looks like Bollywood beauties have made big plans for the next five years as after Kareena, its now Deepika who is all up for marriage after five years.

But unlike Chotte Nawab who has made frank confessions regarding his wish to marry Bebo, Ranbir has chosen to stay quiet on the subject.

First meeting of Abhishek & Aishwarya

Sarkar Raj has a lot going for it. It is Ram Gopal Varma's most anticipated film of the year, Abhishek and Aishwarya's first film together post marriage, and reportedly one of Amitabh's best roles ever.

RGV also had a clear idea on what he wanted from each and every scene. Like, for example, the first scene Abhi-Ash shot after marriage—where their screen characters were meeting for the first time.

The director felt that the sense of newness that the couple was feeling in their relationship (as well as the self consciousness) would translate into great chemistry tempered with doubt on screen. And he certainly got what he wanted.

Sarkar Raj is an intense political drama. A study of power, it explores the politics of development and takes a fresh look at the tradition versus modernity debate.

When Anita Rajan (Aishwarya Rai), CEO of the international company Sheppard Power Plant, brings before the Nagres a power plant proposal for rural Maharashtra, insightful Shankar (Abhishek Bachchan) is quick to realise its benefits for the people. After convincing Sarkar (Amitabh Bachchan), who is against it for various reasons, Shankar undertakes a journey with Anita to the villages of Maharashtra to mobilise support.

However, things are not what they seem and Shankar's dream project gradually becomes a political minefield. In this backdrop, evil forces gang up to bring down the regime of Sarkar and obliterate Shankar's name from the political horizon.

Sarkar Raj is definitely not a sequel to Sarkar, but a new story with the same characters. Let's hope RGV won't have any reason to go into hiding after this film hits the screens.

Sikander Kher's introductory scene costs Rs.15 mn

Sikander Kher's introductory scene in his debut "Woodstock Villa" was inspired from Tom Cruise starrer "Days of Thunder" and shot at a whopping budget of Rs.15 million.

"A special bike Yamaha MP01 costing above Rs.2 million was imported for the scene. The hero rides on it like Ajay Devgan in 'Phool Aur Kaante'. One has to see it. It can't be described," said director Hansal Mehta.

"It was a collective decision. The producer and myself, we both wanted an ideal launch for the actor. He has that potential," he added.

Sikander, the son of Anupam and Kirron Kher, is paired with Neha Oberoi in this thriller.

Commenting upon the lead pair, Mehta said: "We thought of new actors because the script demanded a fresh face. Both the newcomers did a tremendous job. While Sikander came through audition, Neha was selected as she is related to the producer."

Karan Johar refuses to design clothes for SRK

Karan with Shah Rukh Khan (TOI Photo)
Karan Johar’s brief but illustrious stint as costume designer seems to be over.

He won’t be designing or styling Shah Rukh Khan’s costumes for his films. “At least, not this time,” he makes it clear to us from Los Angeles where he’s busy with the pre-production work of his next film.

“I’m so taken up with pre-production, I don’t know if I’m coming or going. It’s impossible for me to do Shah Rukh’s clothes for Adi’s film. Now someone else is doing his costumes this time. It was fun while it lasted and I even got awards for doing Shah Rukh’s clothes.”

He must be the only director in the world to get awards for doing costumes. “Am I? Well, there you are!” He also poses for magazine covers and makes cameo appearances but the multitasking director is a worried man. He says, “At the moment I’m leaving all that behind and focussing on getting back to making films. I will turn 36 this month. And I’m really depressed about my age. Those who said that the 30s are a swinging extension of the 20s, were obviously lying.”

Dr.Akshay Kumar

Ontario, May 13: It was a roller coaster for Akshay Kumar when he was conferred a PhD degree at the 46th convocation of Assumption University in Ontario, Canada. 'Dr Akshay Kumar' is what the University President and Chancellor, Dr Paul Rennick, said repeatedly while addressing him.

It couldn't have been more emotional for the Bollywood star. "I can't believe this has happened," he told rediff.com. "I didn't even pass my college. I don't have any words."

In his acceptance speech, Akshay conceded, "When I was young, I used to pray every night - please, God, let me pass my exam. Then, I realised God doesn't help like that. So I cheated [in my exams] and asked for God's forgiveness."

But Akshay told the South Asian students assembled at the convocation, "Please don't cheat. It doesn?t work, as [despite cheating] I failed."

University President Rennick explained that when Akshay's name came before their Committee, they brought the name forward to the Senate of Assumption University after review, who gave their approval.

Besides Akshay, Carl S Cohen and Aubrey Dan were conferred PhD degrees.
Amongst other things, Dan produces plays on Broadway and Toronto. Cohen, as a lawyer, "is an example of integrity: a characteristic too often neglected and too seldom rewarded."

"We have here tonight one member of the Hindu community [Akshay], and two members of the Jewish community, who are all receiving honours from a Catholic Christian University (Assumption)," Rennick summed up, explaining that the three recipients have an 'inter-religious' overtone.

During his acceptance speech, Akshay repeated talked about his parents, and his values that helped him succeed. "My father taught me that believing in God is living life with confidence," he said. "Those words gave me strength to follow my dreams. Here I am standing with my esteemed colleagues, and it is right to say one thing and that is we all have a dream. My parents laid the foundation of my every achievement and represent calendar of my life".

"This honor is even more important than getting an Oscar," Akshay added. "Only today, I spoke with my five-year-old son, and I was happy to hear that he received his 'blue ribbon' today [like his father, Aarav is also learning martial arts]. Today, I have received the honourary doctorate. So both of us have lot to share with each other when I return to Mumbai."

Ajay Virmani, Akshay's host in Toronto, had also received an honourary degree from the same University two years back. Explaining why Akshay was given an honourary degree, he said "Akshay Kumar is an actor whose very name inspires the youth. He is [one of] Bollywood's hottest properties now."

Virmani went on to explain how Akshay "has been lauded as everything from India's version of Jackie Chan to one of the Sexiest Men Alive."

He also called him India's version of Brad Pitt, thanks to "his rugged good looks and dare devil personality, who has incorporated martial arts into the cinema, making him Bollywood?s first true action hero."

"He has always done his own daredevil stunts. No wonder he is hailed as King Kumar in Bollywood. But all said, it is his positive ethic and dedication that truly makes him the King."

Assumption University President Rennick lived in India for six months, several years back. "When I made that trip, it was a formative event in my life and to this day, I retain a great appreciation of the Indian culture, a warm affection for the Indian people and a deep gratitude for the spiritual heritage that comes from India to the benefit of the whole human community."

So he was grateful to see Akshay travel all the way from India to receive the honourary degree.

When the degree was awarded and the traditional sash was worn, there was a standing ovation for the star.

When Akshay entered the University reception room, a large number of his fans were waiting. Virmani contracted two police officers to serve as tough bodyguards to prevent Akshay from being physically mobbed.
Yet, Akshay unhesitatingly went close to the fence, and shook hands with students and fans, and signed autographs.

One woman even jumped from to hug him, and yet another planted a kiss on his cheek.

To his credit, Akshay smiled through it all and even seemed to enjoy his celebrity status in Windsor, a city with 300,000 inhabitants on Canada-US border with the city of Detroit on the other side. There are about 3,000 Indians living in this city.
